Claude now reaches Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in two different ways: the Claude for Google Workspace add-on opens a sidebar inside a file that is already open, while the Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors let users start in Claude chat and create or edit Google files. Anthropic announced both options on October 6, 2026, in beta. They do not automatically grant the same access to data.
The distinction matters because the add-on works with one particular file by default; connectors rely on authentication with a Google account and on each service's and document's permissions. Neither should be confused with the broader Google Drive connector or the separate Claude in Chrome tool.
Add-on or connectors: what actually changes?
| Aspect | Add-on in Docs, Sheets, and Slides | Connectors started from Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Inside an open file in a Google application, in a sidebar. | In a Claude conversation, on the web or Desktop. |
| Working files | The current file, except for content retrieved through separately enabled connectors. | Existing Google files accessible to the connected account and new Docs, Sheets, or Slides requested from Claude. |
| Editing | Changes the open file in place and records edits in Google's version history. | Creates and edits Google files; on supported setups, shows the file beside the conversation. |
| Setup | Installation through Google Workspace Marketplace and Claude account sign-in. | Individual connector activation and Google authentication; Team and Enterprise require owner enablement. |
| Key boundary | Cannot independently browse other Drive files or create a different file from that sidebar. | Follows the Google account's existing rights; the side panel and capabilities depend on the environment. |
What the add-on can do inside each file
After installing the official Marketplace add-on, the documented route is to open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation and choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. One installation covers all three applications. Google may require user consent or approval from a Workspace administrator. Claude reads the open file and the selected text, cells, or slides to perform tasks in that context.
For Docs, Anthropic describes rewriting passages, restructuring sections, and proposing edits that users can accept or dismiss. For Sheets, it lists formula fixes, pivot tables, native charts, new tabs, and data cleanup. For Slides, the tool can build slides using the deck's themes and layouts and flag overlapping or off-slide elements. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not results of an independent DTech test.
The default Ask before edits mode requests approval before changes. With Accept all edits, ordinary tasks may be applied without individual approvals, while certain sensitive actions still require review. Changes appear in Google's version history under the account using the add-on. The sidebar conversation is not automatically shared with other collaborators on the file.
What the connectors do when you start in Claude
The new Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides connectors are separate from the Google Drive connector. From Claude chat, users can enable them in the connector menu, paste a file link, or explicitly request the creation of a Google document, spreadsheet, or presentation. The documentation cautions that asking for a generic file can produce a local file rather than a Google Workspace file.
On supported setups, the document opens in a panel beside the conversation, where the user and Claude can edit concurrently. Current documentation specifies this panel in Claude on the web with Chrome and in Claude Desktop when its integrated browser is enabled; elsewhere, users may need to choose Open in Google. A connector can open or change only files the authenticated Google account already has permission to access.
The Drive connector serves different tasks, including finding files, reading documents, or managing items subject to authorization. It is not interchangeable with the three specific live-editing connectors. Likewise, installing the add-on inside a file does not, by itself, grant access to every item in Drive; any broader reach depends on connectors enabled by the user or organization.
Permissions, privacy, and beta limitations
The add-on requests permissions to display its sidebar and view or manage the Google file where it is installed. The Marketplace listing also shows account identification information. This is not unrestricted permission to search the whole Drive: according to Anthropic's guide, the sidebar is limited to the open file unless optional connectors are enabled. Connectors, in turn, act through the authorized Google account and honor existing file-sharing permissions.
Content submitted for analysis, messages, and attachments are processed by Anthropic. According to its guide, the add-on does not use that content to train models, but its documented policy retains inputs and outputs for 30 days, with exceptions; zero data retention is unavailable in this beta. Users should check contractual and organizational rules before handling personal, strategic, or confidential information. Approval of an edit does not replace human review of text, calculations, or access rights.
The add-on supports native Docs, Sheets, and Slides files only, not Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files opened in those applications. The documented beta requires Chrome, Edge, or Safari, keeping the sidebar open, and is subject to a six-minute Google limit on long-running operations. On its own, the add-on cannot share files, create other Drive files, export PDFs, or change file ownership. Those constraints belong to the add-on and should not automatically be applied to the connectors.
Plans and Brazil: what is confirmed
As of October 30, 2026, official guidance says the Claude for Google Workspace add-on is in beta for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, so it should not be advertised as a free-plan feature. General Google Workspace connector documentation says connectors are available to Claude users, but that does not establish that every new editing function is enabled on every account or plan. On Team and Enterprise, an owner or primary owner must enable connectors for the organization.
Brazil is listed among the countries where Claude can be accessed, and the Marketplace has a Portuguese-language page for the add-on. However, the sources reviewed do not specifically confirm full availability of this beta to all Brazilian accounts, organizations, and configurations. Actual access depends on the Claude plan, Google account, administrator policies, and connector activation. There is no basis here for quoting a subscription price in Brazilian reais or promising universal access in Brazil.
Which option is a better fit?
For revising text already open, fixing formulas in that particular sheet, or restructuring the current slide deck, the add-on best matches the documented workflow. For starting in Claude, bringing together context from authorized files, or creating a new Google document, the connectors are the intended path. In either case, users should check the authorization screen before granting access and review the final file.
This is a documentation-based comparison using the October 6 announcement, support pages, and the official Marketplace listing, reviewed on October 30, 2026. DTech did not install the add-on, run the connectors, measure performance, or verify access with a Brazilian account.
