Whether you can share a Claude Artifacts link depends on your plan and the artifact type because Anthropic uses two different mechanisms: sharing current artifacts and publishing legacy artifacts made in earlier chats. Free users can still publish a legacy artifact, but they cannot use the general anyone-with-the-link option for current artifacts. Pro and Max support that option for eligible artifacts; Team and Enterprise are also subject to organizational policies. Recipients generally need a Claude account, with an exception for published legacy artifacts.
This is a documentation-based guide, not the result of the DTech team creating an account, sending invitations, or testing a shared link. Its main source is Anthropic's support article dated September 23, 2026, checked against artifact-type and administration documentation on October 24, 2026. Labels and controls may differ depending on the Claude experience available to an account.
Current artifacts and legacy artifacts are different
An artifact is reusable content produced in Claude, such as a document, presentation, design, dashboard, or interactive app. Current artifacts can be made from templates, in conversations, or through Claude Code. Anthropic defines legacy artifacts as those created in a chat before September 16, 2026. They still work and can be shared, but new artifacts of this legacy kind cannot be created.
The distinction is visible in the menu: current artifacts offer Share and access controls, while legacy ones show Publish on Free, Pro, and Max or Share & copy link on Team and Enterprise. Live artifacts made in Claude Cowork before August 19, 2026 follow separate rules. An older tutorial showing a Publish button therefore does not necessarily describe the workflow for a new artifact.
Sharing matrix by plan
| Plan | Current artifact: anyone with the link | Email invitation | Legacy artifact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | No | No | Publish a legacy chat artifact |
| Pro | Yes, for eligible types | Yes, in beta | Publish a legacy artifact |
| Max | Yes, for eligible types | Yes, in beta | Publish a legacy artifact |
| Team | Only if external sharing is allowed | Yes, in beta, subject to settings | Share & copy link, subject to permissions |
| Enterprise | Only if external sharing is allowed | Yes, in beta, subject to settings | Share & copy link, subject to permissions |
Sharing with everyone in an organization or with selected members is available on Team and Enterprise; group sharing is exclusive to Enterprise. The matrix reflects documented capabilities. It does not mean every artifact supports every permission or that a particular organization's external access has been enabled.
How to copy a current artifact's link
- Open the artifact in Claude on the web or Claude Desktop and choose Share.
- On Pro or Max, select Only you or Anyone with the link, when available. To select a particular recipient, use an email invitation.
- On Team or Enterprise, add internal people or groups as allowed, then choose the audience under Who has access. Anyone-with-the-link access requires an organization owner to allow external sharing globally or for that specific artifact.
- Select the available permission level and copy the link. Can view lets people open an artifact and read comments; Commenter additionally allows comments and downloading offered files; Can edit also allows changes. The levels offered depend on the artifact type.
Sharing settings cannot be changed in the Claude iOS or Android app. Anthropic directs users to the web version or Claude Desktop. A Free user who sees Publish should check whether the item is a legacy artifact rather than assuming new-style link sharing has been enabled.
Does the recipient need a Claude account?
Generally, yes. Current sharing requires the recipient to be signed into Claude, even for Anyone with the link. Organization-only links require the appropriate organization account, and personal invitations require an account using the invited email address. The documented exception is a legacy chat artifact published on Free, Pro, or Max, which anyone with the link can open without a Claude account. Features that use Claude may still prompt a visitor to sign in or register.
When an artifact relies on connected apps, viewers use their own connections and permissions, not the creator's credentials. If they lack access to a data source, that part may show an error. Sharing the artifact does not automatically grant access to the creator's files or systems.
Why might sharing be disabled or the link fail?
- Free plan and current artifact: the general anyone-with-the-link sharing option is unavailable. Publishing a legacy artifact is a separate feature.
- Company restrictions: Team and Enterprise artifacts stay internal by default. An owner can enable external sharing organization-wide or for one artifact. External email invitations have a separate setting, enabled by default on Team and disabled by default on Enterprise.
- Ineligible type: artifacts connecting to external apps or calling Claude cannot use Anyone with the link. Team and Enterprise documents also cannot currently use that option outside the organization, according to the reviewed guide.
- Unsupported invitation: email invitations are in beta and do not apply to Claude Docs documents, artifacts connected to other sites, or uploaded files still under review or that failed review, among other cases.
- Recipient lacks access: check sign-in, invited email address, organization membership, and project access for a legacy artifact created inside a Team or Enterprise project.
- Invitation or link revoked: pending invitations expire after 30 days. An owner can disable external sharing, making public organization links stop working until it is restored, except for individually allowed artifacts.
Privacy, permissions, and checks before sharing
A link does not always give the same rights. For individual invitations, the creator can assign a permission level and later remove recipients. There is a limit of 50 external invitees per artifact, including both pending and accepted invitations. If an artifact is also open to Anyone with the link, invited people receive the same access as any link holder regardless of the permission initially selected for them.
Two further checks matter: some artifacts store information in shared storage that other viewers may see, and sharing a legacy artifact created in a Team or Enterprise chat may expose attachments and files from that chat as well. Review data sources, attachments, and confidential information before sending the link.
To stop sharing a current artifact, open Share and restrict the audience or remove people; the precise behavior depends on the plan. For a published legacy artifact, Unpublish removes public access, but Anthropic says the same artifact cannot be published again and that any personal or shared storage data it used is permanently deleted. This differs from merely disabling an organization's external link.
The useful order of checks is to identify whether the content is current, legacy, or an older live artifact, then verify the plan, recipient, sign-in, and administrator policy. A button or URL alone cannot establish whether someone else can open it.
